About
Bernie Adjei - Fashion Designer
This is me wearing the first thing I ever sewed. The year was 2008. It was impulsive. I used to spend a lot of time with a fashion designer friend of mine back in Ghana doing small tasks around his studio, none of which involved sewing. My favourite times were when he would take me backstage to fashion shows and pageants so I would dress and style models. It felt like home.
One particular night, he was making me a shirt. The pieces had been cut so I asked to stitch them together myself. By morning I had a completed shirt, collar and all, with only minimal direction. I was hooked! Later that day, I made a messenger bag. The next day, a wallet. I haven't stopped sewing since.
Very soon, being a food scientist was not appealing anymore. In 2015, my hobby consumed me enough that I quit my full-time corporate job to earn an MBA, and to pursue fashion as a career.
To represent my brand I chose Wala Afour, a name given to me by my Ghanaian grandfather. It's a Ga phrase which means all we need is life. Life is all we ask for, and if we have life all other things are secondary.
The brand's vision is to inspire feelings and experiences that create timeless memories through the design of custom apparel and accessories for both men and women. I believe that there’s a place for everyone in fashion, and that diversity gives the world color, richness and depth. The brand is, therefore, influenced by diversity and hints of my rich African heritage.
By using different types of fabrics, patterns and textures I create unique pieces for the modern person who dares to be different and stand out.
